Cascade General performed
emergency repairs on the 804-foot (245 m) Star Princess, which sustained
extensive damage when it ran aground near Juneau, Alaska.
Repairs included dry
docking on Cascade General's Dry
Dock 4; removal and replacement of more than 210 tons (190 tonnes)
of damaged steel; and repairs on the starboard intermediate shaft,
tail shaft and propeller.
Steel repairs were performed
around the clock, with careful shift overlap. Because the 650 feet
(198 m) of damaged hull steel was close to the centerline of the
keel, scrapping and renewal occurred in three phases. Each phase
required precalculated shifting of keel blocks.
The intermediate shaft
was cold straightened in Cascade General's machine shop - a process
most shipyards can't accomplish in-house. This saved the owner millions
of dollars.
"The vessel's builders
and crew told us repairs would take at least two months," said
Julie Benson, Princess
Cruises' Public Affairs Director. "Cascade General completed
the job within a month."
Cascade General provides
a wide range of ship repair services to the cruise line industry.
We guarantee close, personal supervision of every project.
