Cascade General began
the multi-million dollar refurbishment of the 704' cruise ship MS
Patriot in the Portland Shipyard on October 19th. The 1200-passenger
ship, formerly the Nieuw Amsterdam of Holland America Line, is the
first acquisition by the new United States Lines.
In the next 30 days,
the re-flagged ship will undergo a drydocking, installation of new
bow and stern thrusters, a complete safety upgrade to comply with
all ABS and US Coast Guard standards, and an interior re-modeling
to suit its new mission. It will enter service in the Hawaiian Islands
December 9th, offering seven-night cruises.
United States Lines is
a subsidiary of American Classic Voyages, the largest owner and
operator of U.S.-flagged passenger vessels. ACV also selected Cascade
General to convert a bare hull into a 212' inland-waters luxury
cruise ship earlier this year.
