While transiting the
Columbia River to unload steel in Vancouver, Washington, the Turkish
bulk carrier Cenk Kaptanoglu collided with the BHP dock in Kalama,
Washington, sustaining major damage to the bow and port side. The
damaged area ran from the starboard hawse pipe, diagonally across
the bow to the portside of #1 hold. The force of the impact also
partial collapsed the port side of the foredeck.
After some emergency
patching and partial discharge of cargo, the 568', 36,788 ton DWT
ship was given an exhaustive survey. Further consultations between
the U.S.Coast Guard, the Kaptanoglu Shipping Group and the insurers
resulted in the ship being moved to Portland Shipyard for repairs
by Cascade General.
The engineering staff
at the shipyard has planned to perform all repairs while the ship
remains afloat and an estimated 180 tons of steel will be used.
The Cenk Kaptanoglu was built in 1983, is powered by a 10,900 HP
engine and has a speed of 15 knots.
