Cascade General has completed
the drydocking and electronics upgrade of the Vladivostok-registered
Kapitan Nazin, one of the largest factory trawlers in the world.
The Russian ship is one of three identical craft - each 347 feet
(105 m) long and 10,000-tons displacement - built in Spain in 1993.
They are classified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to withstand ice
to Class 1B and operate year-round off the Siberian coast in the
Sea of Okhotsk. The Kapitan Nazin and its 165 crew can process 125
tons of frozen product per day and store up to 3,200 tons in its
refrigerated hold before off-loading at sea to a freighter.

Management of Seattle, which manages this fleet, is engaged in a
highly-competitive sector of the fishing industry and needed top
quality engineering and a fast turnaround to guarantee maximum fishing
time on the distant grounds. Portland Shipyard's extensive facilities
were put to immediate use as soon as the Kapitan Nazin arrived.
The ship was heavily laden with nets and spare gear on the stern
deck. To reduce the draft for drydocking these bulky loads were
moved to the berth alongside the vessel, while maintenance work
began on the deck gear, fish-processing plant and engine room.
Once up on Portland Shipyard's
Dry Dock 1, Cascade General's Voyage & Small Vessel Repair Division
removed the Wartsila CP-propeller for overhaul, withdrew the shaft
and rudder for inspection, checked the SKF coupling, while blasting
and painting the hull and fitting 68 new zincs. The ship's ice-belt
abrasion areas were coated with Intershield Inerta 160, the same
high-tech paint Cascade General recently applied to one of the U.S.
Coast Guard icebreakers, the Polar Star.
New transducer housings,
on both sides of the box keel, were constructed from 1" plate to
withstand ice impacts and maintain the hull's unusual strength.
Twin aft-looking Simrad ITI sonars and an advanced depth-sounder
were fitted and connected to the bridge, giving the fishing master
unequalled data on the state of the trawl and catch. This switch
to the latest "wireless" system to transmit pictures of the trawl
will enable the crew to fish more productively and efficiently.
